I look at my grandkids some days and barely recognize the world they're growing up in.

Phones instead of playing outside. Friendships lived out on a screen instead of running wild until the streetlights came on. Families spread farther apart, sitting together less, saying less to each other than we used to. And for a lot of us, parents and grandparents both, there's a question we don't always say out loud: how do I raise this generation well, in a world I barely recognize anymore?

I don't think the answer is trying to go back. That world is gone. But I do think the things that actually matter. Presence, patience, love that doesn't try to control, family that shows up for each other, haven't changed at all.

This book is for parents raising young kids in a world full of noise and comparison. It's for parents who've watched a grown child grow distant, or gone silent altogether. It's for grandparents trying to love well from whatever place they've been given in their grandchildren's lives.

Wherever you find yourself, I wrote this for you.

What This Book Will Do For You

Dear Mom, Times Have Changed isn't a book about the past, and it isn't another book blaming "Parents these days" for everything that feels different. This is an honest reflection on how much the world has shifted, and what parents and grandparents can actually do about it.

Written by a father and grandfather navigating this shift alongside you, this book walks you through:
✓ Understand what's actually changed for this generation – Screens, comparison culture, a world with less community and less unstructured time. Not to fear it, but to finally understand it.
✓ Raise grateful, grounded kids in a world of constant more – Teach real gratitude and resilience in a culture of instant access and constant entertainment.
✓ Let your kids struggle when they need to – Why protecting children from every disappointment may be quietly weakening them, and how to trust them with hard things.
✓ Navigate distance or silence with a grown child – Honest, compassionate guidance for estrangement, without pretending every situation is the same, or that one side is always right.
✓ Own your mistakes without drowning in shame – For parents who know they weren't always who their children needed. How to take real accountability and still believe repair is possible.
✓ Love your adult children without controlling them – Let go of the need to manage their choices, and discover how that release often brings you closer.
✓ Grandparent well, even from a distance – Show up without overstepping, build real relationships with grandkids, and understand what "honoring your parents" was actually meant to mean.
✓ Start again, no matter how much time has passed – Practical, hopeful steps toward rebuilding a strained relationship, one small step at a time.
✓ Build the family that's still possible – Refocus your energy on what's in front of you, rather than only grieving what's been lost.

By the end of this book, you won't just understand how much the world has changed. You'll have a clearer sense of the parent, grandparent, and family member you still have time to become.

What's Inside

PART I: THE WORLD THEY'RE GROWING UP IN
The death of quiet, unstructured boredom. The disappearance of the kind of community that used to help raise a child. Screens that have quietly replaced the family table. This section helps you understand what's actually different about the world your kids and grandkids are growing up in, not to fear it, but to finally make sense of it.
This is where the book begins to feel less overwhelming. Not because the world has gotten simpler, but because you finally understand what you're actually working against.

PART II: RAISING KIDS TODAY
The pressure to keep up in a world of constant comparison. Teaching real gratitude to kids who've never known scarcity. Letting children struggle instead of rescuing them from every disappointment. This section gives you practical, honest guidance for raising grounded, resilient kids in a world that makes that harder than it used to be.
This is where you stop parenting out of fear of the world and start parenting with real intention.

PART III: WHEN THEY HAVE THEIR OWN LIVES NOW
The silence that sometimes replaces a relationship with a grown child. The honest reckoning with who you were as a parent, and who you are now. Learning to love without needing to control. This section walks through some of the hardest, most tender territory in family life, with real compassion for both sides.
This is where healing becomes possible, not through blame, but through honesty.

PART IV: A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE
The quiet grief of being kept from grandchildren. How to show up fully without overstepping the parents raising them. A closer, more honest look at what "honoring your parents" was actually meant to mean. This section helps you love well from whatever place you've been given, even when it isn't the place you hoped for.
This is where you learn that love doesn't require control to be real.

PART V: WHAT'S STILL POSSIBLE
It's never too late to take the first small step back toward someone you love. The family you can still build, even after loss. And one final, personal reflection: the letter your own children or grandchildren might write about you one day, and what you still have time to make it say.
This is where the book stops looking backward and starts looking forward, toward everything that's still possible to build.

This Book Is For You If...

  • You're raising young kids and feel outpaced by a world full of screens, comparison, and constant noise
  • You've watched a grown child grow distant, or gone silent altogether
  • You know, honestly, that you weren't always the parent your children needed
  • You're a grandparent who feels kept at arm's length from grandkids you love fiercely
  • You're a grandparent trying to show up well without overstepping the parents raising them
  • You're tired of feeling like "kids these days" and "parents these days" don't understand each other
  • You want honest guidance, not blame directed at one generation or the other
  • You still believe it's not too late to build, or rebuild the family you want.

It's Not Too Late to Build the Family You Want

You don't have to keep watching from a distance, wondering how to close the gap.
You don't have to carry guilt over the parent you used to be, without ever moving toward the parent you could still become.
You don't have to figure out this changed world alone.
This book won't undo the years that have already passed. It won't erase real mistakes, or bring back time you wish you'd had.
But it will show you what's still possible. One honest conversation at a time. One small step at a time. One page at a time.

More From Sam

Why I write

I didn't set out to write books. I set out to make sense of my own life, the losses, the lessons, the slow and hard-won peace that comes with age. Somewhere along the way, I realized the things I was learning weren't just mine to carry. They belonged to anyone who had ever felt lost, tired, or unsure whether their best days were behind them. So I started writing. Not as an expert, but as a fellow traveler. These words are for the people the world often overlooks those of us in the second half of life who are still growing, still hoping, and still becoming who we were always meant to be.
